EBOOK SYNOPSIS:

This book has been written as part of a new series of scientific text-books being published by Plenum Publishing Company Limited. The scope of the series is to review a chosen topic in each volume, and in addition, to present abstracts of the most important references cited in the text. Thus allowing the reader to supplement the information contained within this book without have to refer to many additional publications. This volume is devoted to the subject of Radiation Detectors, known as Photodetectors, and particular emphasis has been placed on devices operating in the infrared region of the electromagnetic spectrum. Although some detectors which are sensitive at ultraviolet and visible wavelengths, are also described. The existence of the infrared region of the spectrum has been known for almost two hundred years but the development of detectors specifically for these wavelengths was limited for a long time due to technology limitations and difficulties in understanding and explaining the phenomena involved. Significant advances were made during World War II, when the potential military applications of being able "to see in the dar~' were demonstrated, and this progress has been maintained during the last forty years when many major advances have been achieved, such that the use of photodetectors for both civil and military applications is now relatively common and can be inexpensive.

Addressed to both students as a learning text and scientists/engineers as a reference, this book discusses the physics and applications of quantum-well infrared photodetectors (QWIPs). It is assumed that the reader has a basic background in quantum mechanics, solid-state physics, and semiconductor devices. To make this book as widely accessible as possible, the treatment and presentation of the materials is simple and straightforward. The topics for the book were chosen by the following criteria: they must be well-established and understood; and they should have been, or potentially will be, used in practical applications. The monograph discusses most aspects relevant for the field but omits, at the same time, detailed discussions of specialized topics such as the valence-band quantum wells.

EBOOK SYNOPSIS:

Optoelectronics will undoubtedly playamajor role in the applied sciences of the next century. This is due to the fact that optoelectronics holds the key to future communication developments which require high data transmission rates and of a extremely large bandwidths. For example, an optical fiber having a diameter few micrometers has a bandwidth of 50 THz, where an impressive number of channels having high bit data rates can be simultaneously propagated. At present, optical data streams of 100 Gb/s are being tested for use in the near future. Optoelectronics has advanced considerably in the last few years. This is due to the fact that major developments in the area of semiconductors, such as hetero structures based on III-V compounds or mesoscopic structures at the nanometer scale such as quantum weHs, quantum wires and quantum dots, have found robust applications in the generation, modulation, detection and processing of light. Major developments in glass techniques have also dramaticaHy improved the performance of optoelectronic devices based on optical fibers. The optical fiber doped with rare-earth materials has aHowed the amplification of propagating light, compensating its own los ses and even generating coherent light in fiber lasers. The UV irradiation of fibers has been used to inscribe gratings of hundreds of nanometer size inside the fiber, generating a large class of devices used for modulation, wavelength selection and other applications.

Optimized Photodetectors In Radiation Environments Theoretical Treatment
Author:
Publisher:
Release Date: 1977
Pages:
ISBN:
Available Language: English, Spanish, And French
EBOOK SYNOPSIS:

In an ionizing environment, the photodetector in an optoelectronic data link is a major source of unwanted signal. For a typical Si PIN photodiode, the signal induced by a 106 rad/sec dose rate is approximately 60 mA/cm2, approximately 100 times the typical optical signal. The purpose of this study is to define the performance of various photodiode structures in ionizing radiation and to recommend optimized photodiodes for reliable digital communications in sustained ionizing environments. The response of Si and heterojunction photodiodes to light and to ionizing radiation are modeled for single-pass, two-pass, and multipass optical detectors.

EBOOK SYNOPSIS:

Nanophotonics involves the study of the behavior of light on nanometer scale. Modern nanoscale semiconductor photodetectors are important building blocks for high-speed optical communications. In this chapter, we review the state-of-the-art 2.5G, 10G, and 25G avalanche photodiodes (APDs) that are available in commercial applications. We discuss the key device parameters, including avalanche breakdown voltage, dark current, temperature dependence, bandwidth, and sensitivity. We also present reliability analysis on wear-out degradation and optical/electrical overload stress. We discuss the reliability challenges of nanoscale photodetectors associated with device miniaturization for the future. The reliability aspects in terms of high electric field, Joule heating, and geometry inhomogeneity are highlighted.
