Mining Lurkers In Online Social Networks
Author: Andrea Tagarelli
Publisher: Springer
Release Date: 2018-11-09
Pages: 93
ISBN:
Available Language: English, Spanish, And French
EBOOK SYNOPSIS:

This SpringerBrief brings order to the wealth of research studies that contribute to shape our understanding of on-line social networks (OSNs) lurking phenomena. This brief also drives the development of computational approaches that can be effectively applied to answer questions related to lurking behaviors, as well as to the engagement of lurkers in OSNs. All large-scale online social networks (OSNs) are characterized by a participation inequality principle, i.e., the crowd of an OSN does not actively contribute, rather it takes on a silent role. Silent users are also referred to as lurkers, since they gain benefit from others' information without significantly giving back to the community. Nevertheless, lurkers acquire knowledge from the OSN, therefore a major goal is to encourage them to more actively participate. Lurking behavior analysis has been long studied in social science and human-computer interaction fields, but it has also matured over the last few years in social network analysis and mining. While the main target audience corresponds to computer, network, and web data scientists, this brief might also help increase the visibility of the topic by bridging different closely related research fields. Practitioners, researchers and students interested in social networks, web search, data mining, computational social science and human-computer interaction will also find this brief useful research material .

Privacy Risk Analysis Of Online Social Networks
Author: Sourya Joyee de
Publisher:
Release Date: 2020-10-22
Pages: 110
ISBN:
Available Language: English, Spanish, And French
EBOOK SYNOPSIS:

The social benefit derived from Online Social Networks (OSNs) can lure users to reveal unprecedented volumes of personal data to an online audience that is much less trustworthy than their offline social circle. Even if a user hides his personal data from some users and shares with others, privacy settings of OSNs may be bypassed, thus leading to various privacy harms such as identity theft, stalking, or discrimination. Therefore, users need to be assisted in understanding the privacy risks of their OSN profiles as well as managing their privacy settings so as to keep such risks in check, while still deriving the benefits of social network participation. This book presents to its readers how privacy risk analysis concepts such as privacy harms and risk sources can be used to develop mechanisms for privacy scoring of user profiles and for supporting users in privacy settings management in the context of OSNs. Privacy scoring helps detect and minimize the risks due to the dissemination and use of personal data. The book also discusses many open problems in this area to encourage further research.

Available Language: English, Spanish, And French
EBOOK SYNOPSIS:

We examine whether social networks facilitate online markets using data from a leading peer-to-peer lending website. We find that borrowers with social ties are consistently more likely to have their loans funded and receive lower interest rates; however, most borrowers with social ties are more likely to pay late or default. We provide evidence that these findings are driven by lenders not fully understanding the relationship between social ties and unobserved borrower quality. Overall, our findings suggest caution for using online social networks as a signal of quality in anonymous transactions.
