Pages: 152
ISBN:
Available Language: English, Spanish, And French
EBOOK SYNOPSIS:

This study adds to the small but growing literature on Black health history--the rise of hospital care and hospital services provided to Blacks from the antebellum era to the integration era, a period of some 150 years. The work examines the political, policy, legal, and philanthropic forces that helped to define the rise, development, and decline of Black hospitals in the United States. Particular discussion is given to the federal Hill-Burton Act of 1946 and the extent to which the legislation impacted Black hospital development. The roles of the Freedman's Bureau, National Medical Association, National Hospital Association, and the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights in the development of Black hospitals is highlighted.

Healing The Racial Divide
Author: Lincoln Rice
Publisher: Wipf and Stock Publishers
Release Date: 2014-10-23
Pages: 216
ISBN:
Available Language: English, Spanish, And French
EBOOK SYNOPSIS:

Healing the Racial Divide retrieves the insights of Dr. Arthur Falls (1901-2000) for composing a renewed theology of Catholic racial justice. Falls was a black Catholic medical doctor who dedicated his life to healing rifts created by white supremacy and racism. He integrated theology, the social sciences, and personal experience to compose a salve that was capable of not only integrating neighborhoods but also eradicating the segregation that existed in Chicago hospitals. Falls was able to reframe the basic truths of the Christian faith in a way that unleashed their prophetic power. He referred to those Catholics who promoted segregation in Chicago as believers in the "mythical body of Christ," as opposed to the mystical body of Christ. The "mythical body of Christ" is a heretical doctrine that excludes African Americans and promotes the delusion that white people are the normative measure of the Catholic faith.

The New Encyclopedia Of Southern Culture
Author: James G. Thomas Jr.
Publisher: UNC Press Books
Release Date: 2012-11-26
Pages: 304
ISBN:
Available Language: English, Spanish, And French
EBOOK SYNOPSIS:

Science and medicine have been critical to southern history and the formation of southern culture. For three centuries, scientists in the South have documented the lush natural world around them and set a lasting tradition of inquiry. The medical history of the region, however, has been at times tragic. Disease, death, and generations of poor health have been the legacy of slavery, the plantation economy, rural life, and poorly planned cities. The essays in this volume explore this legacy as well as recent developments in technology, research, and medicine in the South. Subjects include natural history, slave health, medicine in the Civil War, public health, eugenics, HIV/AIDS, environmental health, and the rise of research institutions and hospitals, to name but a few. With 38 thematic essays, 44 topical entries, and a comprehensive overview essay, this volume offers an authoritative reference to science and medicine in the American South.

The AIDS Conspiracy
Author: Nicoli Nattrass
Publisher: Columbia University Press
Release Date: 2012-03-20
Pages: 224
ISBN:
Available Language: English, Spanish, And French
EBOOK SYNOPSIS:

Since the early days of the AIDS epidemic, many bizarre and dangerous hypotheses have been advanced to explain the origins of the disease. In this compelling book, Nicoli Nattrass explores the social and political factors prolonging the erroneous belief that the American government manufactured the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) to be used as a biological weapon, as well as the myth's consequences for behavior, especially within African American and black South African communities. Contemporary AIDS denialism, the belief that HIV is harmless and that antiretroviral drugs are the true cause of AIDS, is a more insidious AIDS conspiracy theory. Advocates of this position make a "conspiratorial move" against HIV science by implying its methods cannot be trusted and that untested, alternative therapies are safer than antiretrovirals. These claims are genuinely life-threatening, as tragically demonstrated in South Africa when the delay of antiretroviral treatment resulted in nearly 333,000 AIDS deaths and 180,000 HIV infections—a tragedy of stunning proportions. Nattrass identifies four symbolically powerful figures ensuring the lifespan of AIDS denialism: the hero scientist (dissident scientists who lend credibility to the movement); the cultropreneur (alternative therapists who exploit the conspiratorial move as a marketing mechanism); the living icon (individuals who claim to be living proof of AIDS denialism's legitimacy); and the praise-singer (journalists who broadcast movement messages to the public). Nattrass also describes how pro-science activists have fought back by deploying empirical evidence and political credibility to resist AIDS conspiracy theories, which is part of the crucial project to defend evidence-based medicine.

Prime Example
Author: Robert H. Harris
Publisher: Morgan James Publishing
Release Date: 2011-08-01
Pages: 502
ISBN:
Available Language: English, Spanish, And French
EBOOK SYNOPSIS:

Prime Example tells the story of the State of New York Department of Health versus Warren M Levin, MD. In the late 1980s the Commissioner of Health of New York was a very brilliant and morbidly depressed individual who suddenly got the idea to rid the state of all of those alternative doctors! He chose Warren Levin, a board-certified family doctor and the son of a doctor. Dr. Levin's practice had never received a complaint from any patient and he had never been sued on the day that the state served a small telephone book sized set of charges against him. Basically, they asserted that everything he did from morning till night in every day of his practice was unprofessional conduct. The state brought in a very, very zealous witness who had an MD and a JD and was a self-professed quack buster. He spent much of his time testifying against physicians and testified before many government bodies including the U.S. Congress where he specifically mentioned Dr. Levin as a quack on several occasions. The Levin defense brought in an extraordinary compliment of witnesses on his behalf. Among them was Linus Pauling, PhD, with almost 50 honorary MDs and PhD's. He was at the time he testified and remains the only human being to have received two individual Nobel prizes. There were many others, many of them tops in their fields with hefty titles and accomplishments who testified for Levin and much of that testimony is referred to and/or excerpted in "Prime Example". Since the administrative law judge, the prosecutor and the three members of the panel sitting as a mini jury were more beholden to and selected by the Commissioner of Health. Levin knew that no matter what Harris did for him he was going to lose. His hope was that Harris would make a good record which could be presented to the Regents who usually saw the truth for what it was. In the end that's exactly the way it played out and Dr. Levin is still practicing medicine today for the lucky patients of northern Virginia. The state simply could not make him, it's "Prime Example".

Doctoring Freedom
Author: Gretchen Long
Publisher: UNC Press Books
Release Date: 2012-10-22
Pages: 248
ISBN:
Available Language: English, Spanish, And French
EBOOK SYNOPSIS:

For enslaved and newly freed African Americans, attaining freedom and citizenship without health for themselves and their families would have been an empty victory. Even before emancipation, African Americans recognized that control of their bodies was a critical battleground in their struggle for autonomy, and they devised strategies to retain at least some of that control. In Doctoring Freedom, Gretchen Long tells the stories of African Americans who fought for access to both medical care and medical education, showing the important relationship between medical practice and political identity. Working closely with antebellum medical journals, planters' diaries, agricultural publications, letters from wounded African American soldiers, WPA narratives, and military and Freedmen's Bureau reports, Long traces African Americans' political acts to secure medical care: their organizing mutual-aid societies, their petitions to the federal government, and, as a last resort, their founding of their own medical schools, hospitals, and professional organizations. She also illuminates work of the earliest generation of black physicians, whose adult lives spanned both slavery and freedom. For African Americans, Long argues, claiming rights as both patients and practitioners was a political and highly charged act in both slavery and emancipation.
