EBOOK SYNOPSIS:

The present book is based on lectures given by the author at the University of Tokyo during the past ten years. It is intended as a textbook to be studied by students on their own or to be used in a course on Functional Analysis, i. e. , the general theory of linear operators in function spaces together with salient features of its application to diverse fields of modern and classical analysis. Necessary prerequisites for the reading of this book are summarized, with or without proof, in Chapter 0 under titles: Set Theory, Topo logical Spaces, Measure Spaces and Linear Spaces. Then, starting with the chapter on Semi-norms, a general theory of Banach and Hilbert spaces is presented in connection with the theory of generalized functions of S. L. SOBOLEV and L. SCHWARTZ. While the book is primarily addressed to graduate students, it is hoped it might prove useful to research mathe maticians, both pure and applied. The reader may pass, e. g. , from Chapter IX (Analytical Theory of Semi-groups) directly to Chapter XIII (Ergodic Theory and Diffusion Theory) and to Chapter XIV (Integration of the Equation of Evolution). Such materials as "Weak Topologies and Duality in Locally Convex Spaces" and "Nuclear Spaces" are presented in the form of the appendices to Chapter V and Chapter X, respectively. These might be skipped for the first reading by those who are interested rather in the application of linear operators.

EBOOK SYNOPSIS:

This book is the first of a multivolume series devoted to an exposition of functional analysis methods in modern mathematical physics. It describes the fundamental principles of functional analysis and is essentially self-contained, although there are occasional references to later volumes. We have included a few applications when we thought that they would provide motivation for the reader. Later volumes describe various advanced topics in functional analysis and give numerous applications in classical physics, modern physics, and partial differential equations.

Available Language: English, Spanish, And French
EBOOK SYNOPSIS:

A powerful introduction to one of the most active areas oftheoretical and applied mathematics This distinctive introduction to one of the most far-reaching andbeautiful areas of mathematics focuses on Banach spaces as themilieu in which most of the fundamental concepts are presented. While occasionally using the more general topological vector spaceand locally convex space setting, it emphasizes the development ofthe reader's mathematical maturity and the ability to bothunderstand and "do" mathematics. In so doing, Functional Analysisprovides a strong springboard for further exploration on the widerange of topics the book presents, including: * Weak topologies and applications * Operators on Banach spaces * Bases in Banach spaces * Sequences, series, and geometry in Banach spaces Stressing the general techniques underlying the proofs, FunctionalAnalysis also features many exercises for immediate clarificationof points under discussion. This thoughtful, well-organizedsynthesis of the work of those mathematicians who created thediscipline of functional analysis as we know it today also providesa rich source of research topics and reference material.

Pages: 420
ISBN:
Available Language: English, Spanish, And French
EBOOK SYNOPSIS:

This textbook is an introduction to functional analysis suited to final year undergraduates or beginning graduates. Its various applications of Hilbert spaces, including least squares approximation, inverse problems, and Tikhonov regularization, should appeal not only to mathematicians interested in applications, but also to researchers in related fields. Functional Analysis adopts a self-contained approach to Banach spaces and operator theory that covers the main topics, based upon the classical sequence and function spaces and their operators. It assumes only a minimum of knowledge in elementary linear algebra and real analysis; the latter is redone in the light of metric spaces. It contains more than a thousand worked examples and exercises, which make up the main body of the book.

Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
Release Date: 2013-03-09

EBOOK SYNOPSIS:

Functional Analysis is primarily concerned with the structure of infinite dimensional vector spaces and the transformations, which are frequently called operators, between such spaces. The elements of these vector spaces are usually functions with certain properties, which map one set into another. Functional analysis became one of the success stories of mathematics in the 20th century, in the search for generality and unification.

Release Date: 2013-12-01
Pages: 529
ISBN:
Available Language: English, Spanish, And French
EBOOK SYNOPSIS:

This book introduces two most important aspects of modern analysis: the theory of measure and integration and the theory of Banach and Hilbert spaces. It is designed to serve as a text for first-year graduate students who are already familiar with some analysis as given in a book similar to Apostol's Mathematical Analysis. t This book treats in sufficient detail most relevant topics in the area of real and functional analysis that can be included in a book of this nature and size and at the level indicated above. It can serve as a text for a solid one-year course entitled "Measure and Integration Theory" or a com prehensive one-year course entitled "Banach Spaces, Hilbert Spaces, and Spectral Theory. " For the latter alternative, the student is, of course, required to have some knowledge of measure and integration theory. The breadth of the book gives the instructor enough flexibility to choose what is best suited for his/her class. Specifically the following alternatives are available: (a) A one-year course on "Measure and Integration" utilizing Chapters 1 (Sections l. l-1. 3 and 1. 6), 2, 3, 4, portions of 5 (information on Lp spaces), and portions of 7 (left to the discretion of the teacher). (b) A one-year course in "Functional Analysis" utilizing Chapters 1 (Sections 1. 4-1. 6), 5, 6, 7 (Sections 7. 4 and 7. 6), and the Ap pendix. t T. M. EBOOK SYNOPSIS:

The goal of this textbook is to provide an introduction to the methods and language of functional analysis, including Hilbert spaces, Fredholm theory for compact operators, and spectral theory of self-adjoint operators. It also presents the basic theorems and methods of abstract functional analysis and a few applications of these methods to Banach algebras and the theory of unbounded self-adjoint operators. The text corresponds to material for two semester courses (Part I and Part II, respectively), and it is as self-contained as possible. The only prerequisites for the first part are minimal amounts of linear algebra and calculus. However, for the second course (Part II), it is useful to have some knowledge of topology and measure theory. Each chapter is followed by numerous exercises, whose solutions are given at the end of the book.
