Several areas of mathematics find application throughout computer science, and all students of computer science need a practical working understanding of them. These core subjects are centred on logic, sets, recursion, induction, relations and functions. The material is often called discrete mathematics, to distinguish it from the traditional topics of continuous mathematics such as integration and differential equations. The central theme of this book is the connection between computing and discrete mathematics. This connection is useful in both directions: • Mathematics is used in many branches of computer science, in applica tions including program specification, datastructures, design and analysis of algorithms, database systems, hardware design, reasoning about the correctness of implementations, and much more; • Computers can help to make the mathematics easier to learn and use, by making mathematical terms executable, making abstract concepts more concrete, and through the use of software tools such as proof checkers. These connections are emphasised throughout the book. Software tools (see Appendix A) enable the computer to serve as a calculator, but instead of just doing arithmetic and trigonometric functions, it will be used to calculate with sets, relations, functions, predicates and inferences. There are also special software tools, for example a proof checker for logical proofs using natural deduction.

Interest in graphs and their applications has grown tremendously in recent years-largely due to the usefulness of graphs as models for computation and optimization. This comprehensive, applications-driven text provides a fresh and accessible approach suitable for several different courses in graph theory. Written for graduate and advanced undergraduate students, for self-study, and as a reference for working professionals, it covers a wide range of topics in algorithmic, combinatorial, and topological graph theory. The authors present numerous applications and examples designed to stimulate interest in and demonstrate the relevance of new concepts. With its generous use of drawings, streamlined proofs, and concise algorithms, Graph Theory and Its Applications offers a less intimidating treatment of the subject. It also includes more than 1,600 exercises-from routine to challenging-providing a rich source of problems that test your understanding. In this text, the authors succeed in presenting the subject in a cohesive framework that transforms important techniques and analytic tools into a unified mathematical methodology.

Design Theory, Second Edition presents some of the most important techniques used for constructing combinatorial designs. It augments the descriptions of the constructions with many figures to help students understand and enjoy this branch of mathematics. This edition now offers a thorough development of the embedding of Latin squares and combinatorial designs. It also presents some pure mathematical ideas, including connections between universal algebra and graph designs. The authors focus on several basic designs, including Steiner triple systems, Latin squares, and finite projective and affine planes. They produce these designs using flexible constructions and then add interesting properties that may be required, such as resolvability, embeddings, and orthogonality. The authors also construct more complicated structures, such as Steiner quadruple systems. By providing both classical and state-of-the-art construction techniques, this book enables students to produce many other types of designs.

The Advanced Encryption Standard (AES), elliptic curve DSA, the secure hash algorithm...these and other major advances made in recent years precipitated this comprehensive revision of the standard-setting text and reference, Cryptography: Theory and Practice. Now more tightly focused on the core areas, it contains many additional topics as well as thoroughly updated treatments of topics presented in the first edition. There is increased emphasis on general concepts, but the outstanding features that first made this a bestseller all remain, including its mathematical rigor, numerous examples, pseudocode descriptions of algorithms, and clear, precise explanations. Highlights of the Second Edition: Explains the latest Federal Information Processing Standards, including the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES), the Secure Hash Algorithm (SHA-1), and the Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm (ECDSA) Uses substitution-permutation networks to introduce block cipher design and analysis concepts Explains both linear and differential cryptanalysis Presents the Random Oracle model for hash functions Addresses semantic security of RSA and Optional Asymmetric Encryption Padding Discusses Wiener's attack on low decryption exponent RSA Overwhelmingly popular and relied upon in its first edition, now, more than ever, Cryptography: Theory and Practice provides an introduction to the field ideal for upper-level students in both mathematics and computer science. More highlights of the Second Edition: Provably secure signature schemes: Full Domain Hash Universal hash families Expanded treatment of message authentication codes More discussions on elliptic curves Lower bounds for the complexity of generic algorithms for the discrete logarithm problem Expanded treatment of factoring algorithms Security definitions for signature schemes

The topology optimization method solves the basic enginee- ring problem of distributing a limited amount of material in a design space. The first edition of this book has become the standard text on optimal design which is concerned with the optimization of structural topology, shape and material. This edition, has been substantially revised and updated to reflect progress made in modelling and computational procedures. It also encompasses a comprehensive and unified description of the state-of-the-art of the so-called material distribution method, based on the use of mathematical programming and finite elements. Applications treated include not only structures but also materials and MEMS.

The Riemann hypothesis (RH) is perhaps the most important outstanding problem in mathematics. This two-volume text presents the main known equivalents to RH using analytic and computational methods. The book is gentle on the reader with definitions repeated, proofs split into logical sections, and graphical descriptions of the relations between different results. It also includes extensive tables, supplementary computational tools, and open problems suitable for research. Accompanying software is free to download. These books will interest mathematicians who wish to update their knowledge, graduate and senior undergraduate students seeking accessible research problems in number theory, and others who want to explore and extend results computationally. Each volume can be read independently. Volume 1 presents classical and modern arithmetic equivalents to RH, with some analytic methods. Volume 2 covers equivalences with a strong analytic orientation, supported by an extensive set of appendices containing fully developed proofs.

An in-depth account of graph theory, written for serious students of mathematics and computer science. It reflects the current state of the subject and emphasises connections with other branches of pure mathematics. Recognising that graph theory is one of several courses competing for the attention of a student, the book contains extensive descriptive passages designed to convey the flavour of the subject and to arouse interest. In addition to a modern treatment of the classical areas of graph theory, the book presents a detailed account of newer topics, including Szemerédis Regularity Lemma and its use, Shelahs extension of the Hales-Jewett Theorem, the precise nature of the phase transition in a random graph process, the connection between electrical networks and random walks on graphs, and the Tutte polynomial and its cousins in knot theory. Moreover, the book contains over 600 well thought-out exercises: although some are straightforward, most are substantial, and some will stretch even the most able reader.

Based on lecture notes of two summer schools with a mixed audience from mathematical sciences, epidemiology and public health, this volume offers a comprehensive introduction to basic ideas and techniques in modeling infectious diseases, for the comparison of strategies to plan for an anticipated epidemic or pandemic, and to deal with a disease outbreak in real time. It covers detailed case studies for diseases including pandemic influenza, West Nile virus, and childhood diseases. Models for other diseases including Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome, fox rabies, and sexually transmitted infections are included as applications. Its chapters are coherent and complementary independent units. In order to accustom students to look at the current literature and to experience different perspectives, no attempt has been made to achieve united writing style or unified notation. Notes on some mathematical background (calculus, matrix algebra, differential equations, and probability) have been prepared and may be downloaded at the web site of the Centre for Disease Modeling (www.cdm.yorku.ca).
